Klabin supports organic and handcraft fair at the Vila Nova Neighboring Unit

One of the goals is to bring the population of Ortigueira closer to the city’s producers, some of whom participate in Klabin's Social Forests program

Ortigueira, October 25, 2017 – The Vila Nova Neighboring Unit, inaugurated by Klabin in August, will host a fortnightly organic foods fair starting Saturday (October 28), from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. The fair was conceived to occupy a new space and introduce the population to the diversity of products available in the city, as well as encourage family farming through a new channel for direct sale to consumers.

Local farmers will occupy the existing booths at the site to sell fruits, vegetables and greens, as well as cheeses, cold cuts, sweets and biscuits, among other artisanal items. Some of the producers are part of Klabin’s “Social Forests – Planning Sustainable Properties” project, aimed at strengthening small and midsized rural properties economically, environmentally and socially.

“The Social Forests project has the mission of bringing family farmers who have the know-how and desire to produce closer to the local consumer market, which has a high demand for produce. With this initiative, we want the people of Ortigueira to have easier access to products from local farmers, combining convenience and quality,” explained Uilson Paiva, Klabin’s Community Relations manager.

Breakfast

One of the booths at the fair will have a café, where visitors can taste coffee brewed from the best beans, accompanied by bread, cold cuts, sweets, juices and biscuits. Another area will have produce, seasonal fruits and greens from small farms in Ortigueira. There will also be a booth with the region's handcraft products.

The Vila Nova Neighboring Unit was built by Klabin with its own funds and combines leisure, recreation and services to the community, with areas designed to promote social interaction and strengthen relations among the neighboring communities of the Vila Nova neighborhood. The Unit’s more than 3,000 sq. m. area has booths that sell a variety of products, a games area, outdoor gym facilities, leisure areas and a playground for kids. The structure was designed to generate income for the community and stimulate interaction among the local population.

The contest was organized to promote Prova Brasil, one of the tools used by Brazil’s Ministry of Education to evaluate public education in the country. Klabin’s family farming project in Paraná receives SESI’s recognition seal

Klabin’s project helps small farmers from the cities of Ortigueira, Imbaú and Telêmaco Borba in all stages of production

Paraná, October 17, 2017 – The program “Social Forests – Planning Sustainable Properties” to support family farming, promoted by Klabin in Paraná, received the SESI Seal for the Sustainable Development Goals in Curitiba. The award recognizes institutions that adopt practices to promote the SDG, a global initiative by the United Nations (UN) to support the planet’s sustainable development in three spheres: economic, social and environmental.

Klabin’s project helps small farmers from the cities of Ortigueira, Imbaú and Telêmaco Borba in all stages of production, from obtaining the Rural Environmental Registration (CAR) to diversifying property, encouraging the culture of association/cooperatives and ultimately seeking to sell products in local markets.

In a little over two years of operation, 230 properties have participated and over 50 training actions have taken place involving agricultural management, livestock, organic production, environmental education and others. One of the program’s most recent results was the commercialization carried out by the COCATIMEL Cooperative, from Imbaú, and the Association of Lageado Bonito Residents, in Ortigueira, with Sodexo, a meal supplier to Klabin’s two plants and Forestry area.

"The program has connected knowledgeable, hard-working farmers to the local consumer market, which has a high demand for produce but, unfortunately, still brings these goods from more distant regions,” noted Uilson Paiva, Klabin’s Community Relations manager. Social Forests is carried out in partnership with Sebrae, the Association for Environmental and Life Preservation (Apremavi), and The Nature Conservancy (TNC).
