Three Klabin Projects Win the Forest Dialogue Award
Winners included actions to conserve water resources, forest management and family farming
Paraná, July 8, 2019 – Three Klabin projects were honored by Forest Dialogue, an initiative that brings together forestry companies, environmental organizations and social movements. The actions include the conservation of water resources, forest management and family farming, which garnered the top three rankings. The winning projects, which competed against projects by other companies throughout Brazil, were: Forest Planning – Micro basins and Water Solidarity; Forest restoration, Creation of Ecological Corridors and Conservation of Water Resources; and Restoration of a Public Spring and Environmental Education.
These awards reaffirm Klabin’s policy of sustainability and its concern for communities surrounding its operations. Its social and environmental actions range from dialogue and engagement to management of impacts in these regions. “We are pioneers in the creation and maintenance of forest mosaics, interspersing planted forests and preserved native forests, with the creation of ecological corridors that allow for the movement of the region’s rich biodiversity. We also help in the conservation of water resources that supply several communities, and we implement family farming programs,” said Uilson Paiva, Community Relations Manager at Klabin.
The Forest Dialogue is an independent initiative that facilitates interaction among representatives of forestry companies, environmental organizations and social movements to build a common vision and agenda. The award seeks to strengthen and multiply environmental conservation actions across Brazil. Projects submitted by the companies are evaluated by the Forest Dialogue commission on four criteria: environment, water, and social and economic ascpects.
About the projects
Forest Planning: Micro basins and water solidarity – involves the development of a matrix to evaluate the impact of forestry operations on the environment and on communities, with parameters that indicate mitigation efforts, integrating production with protection of biodiversity and reduction of social impacts.
Forest restoration, creation of ecological corridors and conservation of water resources – dedicated to the implementation of the Legal Forests program, which includes actions to restore permanent forest protection areas and environmental education for Forest Development partners.
Restoration of public springs and environmental education – Forest restoration efforts through the Social Forests program, which aims to strengthen the environmental, social and economic situation of small and midsized rural properties involved in family farming.
Klabin is Brazil’s largest producer and exporter of packaging paper, the leader in the corrugated board and industrial bag packaging segments, and the only company in the country offering one-stop shop solutions in hardwood, softwood and fluff pulp. Founded in 1899, Klabin has 17 industrial units in Brazil and one in Argentina. In Paraná alone, Klabin has generated over 10,000 direct and indirect jobs in more than 25 cities close to its operations, especially in the Campos Gerais region.
Klabin pioneered the adoption of mosaic-based forest stewardship, which consists of planted forests interspersed with preserved native forests, forming ecological corridors that help to maintain the biodiversity. Klabin’s forest area in Paraná totals 342,000 hectares, 142,000 of which are native forests. Klabin also maintains an Ecological Park in the Monte Alegre Farm in Telêmaco Borba for research and conservation purposes, which provides shelter and rehabilitates wild animals that are the victims of accidents or abuse, thus supporting the efforts of environmental authorities. It also helps to preserve the region’s flora and fauna, including endangered species.
Klabin’s management is entirely guided by Sustainable Development. Klabin has implemented most of its social and environmental programs in the Campos Gerais region, notably Social Forests – Planning Sustainable Properties, Legal Forests, Solid Waste Project, Growing Up Reading, Caiubi Program, Força Verde Mirim and Environmental Protectors.
Klabin also supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), is a signatory to the UN Global Compact and the Brazilian Pact to Eradicate Slave Labor, and seeks suppliers and business partners that share its values of ethics, transparency and respect for sustainability principles.
