Puma Project fosters regional development

Defined together with the community, the Social and Environmental Action Plan prioritizes initiatives in Ortigueira, Telêmaco Borba and Imbaú

In 2012, Klabin started a wide social diagnosis of the area directly impacted by its new pulp plant, in the cities of Ortigueira (where the plant is installed), Imbaú and Telêmaco Borba, all in the state of Paraná. Supported by expert consultancy by Funbio, the Social and Environmental Action Plan consists in a wide participative process, involving multiple stakeholders from urban and rural areas of the three cities, and aims to define the company’s actions in connection with Puma Project.

The starting point was to gather data on the region’s socioeconomic indicators from official sources. Meanwhile, the Company interviewed 211 members of the communities and held meetings in the three cities to validate and complement the diagnosis, which was then made available online. These initiatives were joined by representatives of the state and local administrations, local representatives, community leaders, NGOs, educational and religious institutions, companies, unions, trade associations and others.

Further rounds of meetings with the communities of the cities of Ortigueira, Imbaú and Telêmaco Borba defined the priorities for investment allocation. In order to identify areas already contemplated by the budgets of each municipality and avoid unwanted overlapping, Klabin met with the local administrations, and with regional Health and Education departments, to present and validate the suggested projects.

At the same time, it signed partnerships with the municipalities, which defined the necessary complements for each project, such as future maintenance of the facilities, appointment of employees and others.

The future projects, listed below, include the fields of health, education, culture, leisure, environment, family agriculture, entrepreneurship, welfare, urban infrastructure and services.

“In light of the inclusive process of allocation, Klabin is certain that the projects that were chosen meet the real needs of communities,” said Uilson Paiva, Sustainability and Communication manager at Project Puma.

“The social investments in Project Puma reinforce the commitment to our Sustainability Policy, which calls for practicing social responsibility in the communities where we operate,” said Francisco Razzolini, general manager of Puma Project.
