Klabin reports adjusted EBITDA growth of 8% in the second quarter of 2019

  • Adjusted EBITDA in the second quarter of 2019 reached R$957 million, up 8% from the same period in 2018.

  • Net sales revenue grew 16% in the second quarter of 2019 compared to the same period in 2018, driven by sales growth across all business lines.

  • The Puma Unit operated above nominal capacity for the 4th consecutive quarter, reaching production of 387,000 tons in the second quarter of the year.

São Paulo, August 5, 2019 – Klabin, Brazil’s largest packaging paper producer and exporter, the country’s only producer to offer solutions in hardwood, softwood and fluff pulp, and the leading producer of corrugated board packaging and industrial bags, reported 8% growth in adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization) in the second quarter of 2019 compared to the same period last year, which came to R$957 million.  In the first half of the year, adjusted EBITDA came to R$1,962 million, up 19% from the first half of 2018.

Driven by sales volume growth across all of the Company’s business lines, combined with the appreciation of the U.S. dollar against the Brazilian real in the period, Klabin’s net revenue in the period came to R$2,600 million, an increase of 16% from the second quarter of 2018.

Klabin’s total sales volume in 2Q19, excluding wood, stood at 818,000 tons, up 15% from the same period last year, reflecting the operating performance of the company’s units. Noteworthy was the 26% growth in pulp sales volume and 19% growth in paperboard sales, reflecting the operational consolidation of the Puma Unit and the flexibility in the paper and packaging markets, which, despite the slower recovery of the domestic market, was offset by increased exports, especially of paperboard.

Investments

In the second quarter of 2019, Klabin invested R$581 million, of which R$92 million went to forest operations, R$144 million to the operational continuity of its plants and R$57 million to special projects and expansions. Investments were also made in the Puma Project II during the period, which totaled R$288 million. Approved on April 16 this year and with total investments estimated at R$9.1 billion, the new expansion cycle involves the construction of two packaging paper (kraftliner) machines, with integrated pulp production, which will be built in Ortigueira, Paraná, at the same site where the Puma Unit, its pulp mill inaugurated in 2016, is located.
