Klabin holds 26th edition of Caiubi Program

Created 15 years ago, the Project encourages environmental awareness and training of educators

Correia Pinto, May 5, 2016 – Klabin, Brazil’s largest paper producer and exporter, and the leading manufacturer of paper and board for packaging, corrugated board packaging and industrial bags, held on May 4 and 5 the 26th edition of the CaiubiProgram, which focused this year on schools of the city of Lages, Santa Catarina, benefiting around 50 teachers of local and state public schools. Held at Klabin’s Environmental Education Center, inaugurated last year in Correia Pinto, Santa Catarina, this edition included lectures and environmental awareness-raising activities, as well instructions on animals, plants, sustainability and forest stewardship.

Teachers were given the opportunity to learn about the Legal Forest Program, promoted by Klabin in partnership with the Association for Preservation of the Environment and Life (Apremavi) to provide guidance for small and medium-sized rural producers on efficient use of land. The agenda of the event also enabled teachers to participate in games, prepared in coordination with the Environmental Police, aiming to provide information on the regional fauna shared by experts that monitor animals within the company’s forest areas. Participants also visited Klabin’s Araucária Trail, in Correia Pinto, and the botanic and entomology labs of the University of the State of Santa Catarina (Udesc).

The Program, which started in Santa Catarina in 2007, has brought Klabin closer to the communities living in the 40 cities of the state where the company maintains forest and industrial operations. The goal of the project is to raise awareness of educators to environmental issues, so they may pass on the knowledge to their students and the communities where they act, by developing environment-related work that can also add to the school’s curriculum. This helps share the company’s experiences with sustainable development with the population, who responds positively at the end of each program and passes on the knowledge.

In addition to giving out teaching materials and booklets, Klabin’s forest and industrial areas promote lectures on the company’s social and environmental initiatives for sustainable development. The activities of the 26th edition of the Caiubi project were conducted by Klabin in partnership with the University of the State of Santa Catarina (Udesc), the Environmental Police, Apremavi, expert researchers and also supported by the Municipality of Lages.

The Caiubi Program

Klabin started the Caiubi Program in the state of Paraná in 2001. In Santa Catarina, the Project is conducted in partnership with Education Departments of local administrations. Since its creation, the project has engaged more than a thousand teachers of 377 schools and around 122,000 students.
