Klabin is the largest Brazilian paper producer and exporter and is market leader in packaging papers, corrugated boxes and industrial sacks. It is the biggest paper recycler in South America and also produces and sells wood in logs – used in the furniture industry and in civil construction.
Founded more than 100 years ago, it has 17 industrial plants in Brazil and one in Argentina. Klabin is self-sufficient in wood and owns 200 thousand hectares of planted forests and 150 thousand hectares of preserved native forests.
Organized into four business units – Forestry, Paper, Corrugated Boxes and Industrial Sacks – in 2005, gross revenue totaled R$ 3.2 billion.
Klabin was the first company in the pulp and paper sector in the Americas to have its forests certified by the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) testifying to the fact that the company runs its activities with the highest standards of environmental conservation and socioeconomic sustainability. Virtually 100% of Klabin’s forests have been certified by this demanding international certifying body, as have the chains of custody in the paper and board plants for packaging and industrial sacks.

Packaging Papers
Klabin is the biggest producer and exporter of packaging paper (kraftliner and cartonboard) in Brazil and when the expansion project MA-1100 is concluded, production capacity of the Monte Alegre Plant will grow from 700 thousand tons/year to 1.1 thousand tons/year. This will make the company more competitive externally and raise its total production capacity to 2 million tons/year.
The project will place the Plant, currently the largest paper mill in Brazil, among the ten biggest paper mills in the world. Klabin will be the sixth largest manufacturer of virgin-fiber board in the world.
Cartonboard
When the project is concluded, Klabin will produce 740 thousand tons/year of cartonboard, which is used in the production of packages mainly for the food segments (milk, dairy products, juices, sauces, wines and frozen foods), beverages (soft drinks and beer), hygiene and cleaning products and pharmaceuticals.
Klabin cartonboard has several distinguishing features, highly regarded by the market, such as international certification for chain of production by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the German Institute, ISEGA, certificate, which guarantees that the paper used in the package may come into direct contact with food. ISEGA analyzes a series of elements, based on American legislation – FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and German legislation (Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung - BfR). Besides this, Klabin cartonboard is made using a mixture of short fiber (Eucalyptus) and long fiber (Pine) which gives the package excellent strength, as well as optimum printability in offset, flexographic and rotogravure printing processes.
Klabin products are very well received in the USA, and in countries of Asia and Europe.
Packaging Paper (Kraftliner)
Klabin is the pioneer and leader of Kraftliner production in Latin America, and also the biggest manufacturer and exporter of packaging paper, responsible for 74% of all Brazilian exports. Today the company has 6% of international kraftiner trade. Kraftliner produced by Klabin is supplied to the nine box plants within the Group, and also sold to corrugated box makers in more than 50 countries.
All Klabin’s virgin-fiber paper mills have been awarded the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) seal for chain of custody, which guarantees raw material traceability, thus confirming the company’s commitment to sustainable development practices throughout its production process.
