The sustained exploitation of native forests is intended to maintain the species structure which makes up the biological diversity of Monte Alegre Farm, providing ecological, social and economic benefits.

The most important step in the Plan for Sustainable Management is the survey of species found in Klabin’s native forests. One of the final studies resulted in an inventory of 240 plant species, of which 130 were of potential therapeutical interest.
At present, about 60 plants are kept which are used in every season of the year, and are produced with silvicultural techniques either in good forest management or in cultivation. Due to the different properties of each species, specific techniques of cultivation and harvesting are applied.
Based on the data collected in the surveys, strategies are set up for ongoing exploitation of each one of the chosen species, as an alternative to the multiple use for the native ecosystems, thereby guaranteeing their maintenance for future generations. At the same time, an analysis is made of the conditions for sustainability and need for cultivation.
The majority of the products are made using native or cultivated plants from the region. Only those species which do not adapt to local conditions are brought from other parts of the country.
In this process, Klabin guarantees complete traceability of the plant species used. All of this care assures the quality of the manufactured products and minimal impact on the environment.
