Klabin was a pioneer in adopting Sustainable Development concepts in the country, and is committed to conserving natural resources in all its activities, practicing the principles of its Sustainability Policy on a daily basis.
It is in the forestry sector that Klabin's contribution to environmental preservation can be best seen - a consequence of the conservationist vision and awareness of the company's founders. Supported by research mainly in the fields of genetics, silviculture and soil management, every year the company plants new forests which are highly productive and environmentally healthy.
Raw material for Klabin's production is the wood from the pine and eucalyptus plantations which are preserved with extensive areas of native forests in a system known as "mosaic".
By December 2008, Klabin owned 449 thousand hectares of forested area, 224 thousand hectares of which in planted forests and 187 thousand hectares in preserved native forests.
Klabin's forests in Parana and Santa Catarina are certified by the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) which testifies to the fact that they are managed in a socially just, environmentally correct and economically viable way. The FSC certification of practically 100% of its forests makes Klabin more competitive in international markets - which are more and more demanding of the origin of the wood they use.
Thanks to the management of its forests, Klabin became the first company in Brazil to be recognized by the international organization Rainforest Alliance as a "trend-setter in Sustainable Development".
In 1999, the FSC had already certified Klabin's non-wood products. In 2001, it granted the chain of custody company for phytotherapeutical and phytocosmetic products, as proof of multiple, rational and sustained use of natural resources.
The fauna in Klabin's forests, in Parana, has been the subject of study since the decade of 1980. Until today, 605 species of mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and fish have been identified. Of this total, 43 are on Ibama's endangered list of birds: tiger heron, purple-winged ground-dove, Temminck's seedeater, pipit, purple-breasted parrot, sharp-tailed grass-tyrant, and of mammals: giant anteater, bat, maned wolf, ocelot, tiger cat, margay, puma and brocket deer.
In Santa Catarina's forests, five rare species of bird have been found: purple-breasted parrot, king vulture, blue bunting, red-billed scythebill and yellow-legged thrush and two of mammal (ocelot and tiger cat). Three of them are classified as endangered by Ibama: the purple-breasted parrot, the ocelot and the tiger cat.
The Phytotherapy Program, a blend of environmental preservation and social responsibility, was initiated in 1984. This Program is responsible for approximately 30 medicines used in the health care of employees and the community in Telemaco Borba, Parana, and have been authorized by Government Health Agency Anvisa. The medicines manufactured in the Phytotherapy Products laboratory are derived from medicinal plants, the majority of which are found in the native forests of Monte Alegre Farm, and are used by employees and their families.
To promote growth of the forest base, which is an important factor in sustainability, Klabin interacts with small and medium-sized farmers in its Forestry Incentive Programs. This is also an economically viable option, which can create wealth in a shared, more ample way, helping people to stay put in the countryside, distributing income and preserving nature.
We have developed the Legal Woods Program in conjunction with the NGO Apremavi (Association for the Protection of Environment and Life) and with Epagri (Company for the Study of Livestock and Agriculture and Rural Education in Santa Catarina) in order to encourage planning of these rural properties, their compliance with environmental legislation and the recuperation and conservation of areas (of permanent preservation and legal reserves)
