Monitoring Program of Hydrographic Basins
The target of the Monitoring Program of Hydrographic Basins is to protect rivers, streams, lakes and the like and comply with legislation on water sources. In Parana, 700 hectares of planted forest will be returned to native forest to help protect water sources. In Santa Catarina the required work has been included in the Program for Environmental Recuperation which has been signed with the state body called Fatma (Fundaçao do Meio Ambiente). Overall, all forests planted after the year 2000 have followed this same concept.
Water Consumption
Water is one of the most important items of consumption in the papermaking process. The correct management of this natural resource is vital for its continued availability. Its consumption is significant neither in the corrugated box plants nor in industrial sack conversion, whereas average consumption of 5.2m³/t in the recycling plants needs attention. Total consumption in 2005 was 64,646,644m³ with a specific average in the paper mills of 50.35m³/t. In the paper mill in Telemaco Borba, Klabin’s largest, specific consumption was 40.46m³/t with a goal 30m³/t to be reached by 2008, when the mill expansion will be completed. The project will use the latest technology for closed water-loops, effluent recovery within the process and fiber loss reduction. At the same time, Klabin has made constant efforts to draw attention to the need to optimize production and reduce wastage.
