In order to guarantee its leadership position and the competitiveness of its products, Klabin has made it a priority to develop clean technology and invested heavily in this area. As well as being one of the pioneers in the treatment and use of waste to generate energy, Klabin is an associate member of one of the most important research institutes in the world for pulp and paper, STFI- Packforsk.

Planning assumes that the final objective will always be sustainability. The company is concerned with assuring good management of its plantations and minimizing possible environmental impacts and has consequently invested in technological development, including the use of modern resources of geographical information, studies to evaluate the impact of silviculture on water sources, soil and biodiversity, as well as many investments in operational equipment. On the other hand, research and development focuses on customer needs in a reciprocal process and responding to market demands. To promote and introduce forestry technology, Klabin has joined the principal Forestry Research Institutes in Brazil, such as IPEF, SIF, FUPEF and CEPEF. Furthermore, the company is associated with CAMCORE, a respected international cooperative, for the conservation of tropical pines, headquartered in the University of North Carolina (USA).

The Superar Program was set up to improve both production and productivity in the mill at Monte Alegre. This program was named for the group of improvement projects conducted with WCM (World Class Manufacturing) methodology. In this program, specific routines and tools for each type of improvement project are always used with the objective of progressively eliminating losses – losses being considered as any process which is subject to improvement.
