As well as being responsible for supplying Klabin’s paper mills with their raw material – wood – the Company’s Forestry Business Unit is the biggest supplier in Brazil of logs from planted, certified forests to saw mills and veneer plants. Its processes guarantee reliability and low cost for products, always in keeping with the Company’s sustainability policy. In 2010, the Forestry Unit transported 9.9 million tons of pine and eucalyptus logs and wood chips of and forest wastes to produce energy from biomass. The volume was 25% above that of 2009 (7.9 million). The yield from eucalyptus forests, measured in tons of pulp per planted hectare, has been growing year on year as a result of investments in research and development. The productivity of the areas in fiber in 2010 was 40% superior to what was obtained five years ago, with a saving in time, transport and energy.Klabin has most of its forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), and was the first company from the pulp and paper sector in the Southern Hemisphere to be granted FSC certification, for its forestry areas in Parana, in 1998.
When it adopted the philosophy of Sustainable Development, Klabin also embraced socioenvironmental responsibility, which has won the company recognition from the public and from important organizations connected with environmental preservation.
In 1999, the company was granted certification for management of medicinal plants: in 2001, the cycle was completed with the chain of custody certification of non-wood forest products, which opened up opportunities for the company to sell phytotherapy and phytocosmetic products with the FSC trademark.
The forests located in Santa Catarina were FSC certified in 2004. The Monte Alegre Plant in Telemaco Borba, Parana, which is the biggest paper mill in Brazil, was granted the FSC Mixed trademark in July 2005 which guarantees that at least 70% of the wood used in paper production is certified by the FSC and the rest is controlled wood that has originated from the plantations of producers receiving incentives.
These certifications have corroborated the policy which has been Klabin’s for decades of respect for the environment and in favor of sustained socioeconomic development. They reassert the international image of the group as a proponent of rational utilization of natural resources.
