1889

Arrival of Mauricio Freeman Klabin in Brazil.

1890

Creation by Mauricio Klabin of the company called M.F.Klabin e Irmao, a printer (Empreza Graphica Klabin) and importer of office supplies in Sao Paulo.

1899

Founding of Klabin Irmaos e Cia. (KIC), headed by Mauricio Klabin, his brothers Salomao Klabin and Hessel Klabin, and their cousin Miguel Lafer. The company imports stationery products and produces supplies for offices, stores, government agencies and banks.

1902

Entry of the Klabin-Lafer family into the papermaking sector, by leasing the Papel Paulista plant in Vila do Salto de Itu.

1903

First ad placed by Klabin Irmaos e Cia. (KIC).

1907

End of the lease contract and start of construction projects for building Klabin’s own plant.

1909

July 3rd: Establishment of Companhia Fabricadora de Papel (CFP) by KIC and other shareholders.

1914

Start-up of production at Companhia Fabricadora de Papel (CFP), the plant built in the Santana neighborhood, in the city of Sao Paulo, SP.

1918

Transfer of the printing company Empreza Graphica Klabin from Rua Brigadeiro Tobias to an area alongside Companhia Fabricadora de Papel (CFP). KIC offices later became known as Ponte Grande Klabin (PGK), responsible for the manufacture of train tickets, playing cards and art paper.

1920

Establishment of the KIC office in Rio de Janeiro, then the Capital of the country, with Wolff Klabin heading up the business.

1923

Death of Mauricio Klabin.

1924

CFP stands out as one of the three largest paper mills in Brazil.

1925

Mauricio Klabin’s heirs leave the company.

1928

The company’s capital stock is divided among the managing partners Hessel Klabin, Salomao Klabin, Wolff Klabin and Miguel Lafer’s son, Horacio Lafer, as his heir.

1929

Establishment of the company Sociedade Anonima Jardim Europa (SAJE), as a branch of Klabin.

Entry of the second generation of the Klabin-Lafer family into the company.

1931

Leasing of Manufatura Nacional de Porcelanas – S/A (MNP), by KIC.

1934

Acquisition of the Monte Alegre Farm, in the municipality of Tibagi, in Parana, in order to build its first integrated paper mill, called Industrias Klabin do Parana (IKP).

1936

Visconde de Moraes buys MNP, which becomes a branch of KIC.

1941

July 9th: alteration of the company name from IKP to Indústrias Klabin do Paraná de Celulose S.A. (IKPC).

1943

Association of KIC with Empresa de Caolim Ltda. as majority shareholder.

Start of re-forestation work at the Monte Alegre Farm, PR, with the planting of araucaria pines.

1944

Construction of the Harmonia dam for the Maua Hydroelectric Plant.

1945

Corporate structure was reorganized in 1945, with the admission of Ema Gordon Klabin who represented Hessel Klabin’s heirs and Samuel Klabin who represented Salomão Klabin’s heirs. Both of them formally joined the group of shareholders of Klabin Irmãos & Companhia – KIC, as managing directors, following the death of their parents.

KIC is run by the managing partners Horácio Lafer, Samuel Klabin, Ema G. Klabin and Wolff Klabin, the second generation, until the end of the decade of 1950.

1946

Start-up of operations of the Monte Alegre, PR plant.

1947

First time in the history of Brazilian industry that a part of the domestic market demand for newsprint is supplied by a Brazilian producer.

1951

Establishment of Rilsan Brasileira S.A., as a sister-company to KIC in partnership with Nitroquímica Brasileira S.A. and Votorantim Industry for the manufacture of synthetic fibers.

1952

Start of corrugated box production in PGK.

1953

January 26th: inauguration of the Maua (PR) Hydroelectric Plant, with the presence of Getúlio Vargas, President of the Republic at the time.

1955

Acquisition of Companhia Universal de Fosforos, in Rio de Janeiro, RJ, by KIC. Its installations were transferred to the borough of Ibirapuera, in Sao Paulo, SP, as a subsidiary of KIC.

Establishment of the Del Castilho, RJ plant in the corrugated packaging sector.

1958

Start-up of construction work of the electric trolley in Monte Alegre, PR.

1959

November 11th: inauguration of the electric trolley, at that time considered to be the fastest in the world and the one having the longest free span.

1960

Sale of Companhia Universal de Fosforos to Fiat Lux do Brasil and exit from that sector of activities.

The management of Klabin Irmãos & Companhia – KIC underwent changes with the establishment of the Advisory Council made up of Abrahão Jacob Lafer, Armando Klabin, Daniel Miguel Klabin, Ema Gordon Klabin, Esther Klabin Landau, Graziela Lafer Galvão, Horácio Klabin, Israel Klabin, Jacob Klabin Lafer, Lilia Levine Martins Xavier, Miguel Lafer, Sylvia Lafer Piva and Vera Lafer.

The Klabin Group began to professionalize administration of its companies with the establishment of a board composed of executives who were responsible for managing Papel e Celulose Catarinense - PCC. The new company was set up as a subsidiary of Klabin Irmãos & Companhia – KIC, in partnership with the Monteiro Aranha Group and two overseas organizations: Adela Investment Co. SA and International Finance Corporation – IFC – the finance arm of the World Bank. The signed contract required a Board of Directors to be set up, the first of its kind to be installed in a company of the Klabin Group.

1961

Establishment of Papel e Celulose Catarinense Ltda. Referred to as “Project II”, it provided for the establishment of a modern kraft paper and long-fiber pulp plant in the city of Lages, state of Santa Catarina, and use of the region’s forest reserves.

Establishment of the Vila Anastacio, SP plant as a branch of KIC and expansion of the corrugated packaging sector. Production of this Unit reached levels considered to be the highest in Latin America at the time.

1963

Fire in the IKPC (pine and eucalyptus) forest reserves.

1965

Establishment of the Santa Luzia, MG plant, which in June goes into operation producing wall tiles.

1967

Purchase of Cia. Manufatura de Papel Embalagens (Cimape) in the city of Piracicaba, SP, as a branch of KIC.

September: establishment of Papelao do Nordeste S.A. (PONSA), with financial aid from Fundo de Investimentos do Nordeste (FINOR).

Start-up of construction of Papel e Celulose Catarinense Ltda.

1969

Start-up of operations of the Papel e Celulose Catarinense Ltda. (PCC) mill for the production of pulp and natural kraft paper. The plant was a pioneer in Brazil in the bleaching of pulp using the chlorine dioxide process.

Construction of PONSA starts, in the town of Goiana (PE), which produced cardboard from sugar-cane bagasse.

1970

Association of KIC with Hoescht for the production of “Trevira” brand synthetic fiber, through Companhia Brasileira de Sinteticos (CBS)

1973

March 20th: start-up of production at PONSA.

Establishment of Celucat Artes Graficas S.A., an integrated subsidiary of Papel e Celulose Catarinense Ltda, with the aid of the State of Santa Catarina Development Fund. Located in the city of Lages, SC, the plant is geared to the production of paper sacks and envelopes.

1974

January: leasing of plant in the city of Porto Alegre, RS, for conversion of corrugated packaging.

Acquisition of ONIBLA S.A. Industria e Comercio de Papel by CFP.

1975

Installation of CFP Mogi das Cruzes (SP), as subsidiary of CFP for the production of tissue paper (Toilet paper, kitchen towel, napkins and tissues).

1978

December: organization in groups with activities in common companies, branches and establishments:

Klabin Espirito Santo Rural S.A. and Klabin Boa Vista Rural S.A., as subsidiaries of KIC.

Klabin Campo Mourao Agroflorestal S.A., Klabin do Parana Agroflorestal (KPAF) and Madeireira Klabin do Parana S.A., as full subsidiaries of Industrias Klabin do Parana de Celulose SA (IKPC).

Klabin Ceramica S.A. (KC), as a wholly owned subsidiary of KIC, which incorporated the Santa Luzia, MG, and MNP, RJ units.

Klabin Administraçao e Serviços S.A. (KASSA), as a subsidiary of KIC and Klabin do Parana Administraçao e Serviços S.A., as a subsidiary of IKPC.

Klabin Embalagens S.A. (KESA), as a wholly owned subsidiary of KIC, receiving the industrial establishments of the Del Castilho, RJ, Vila Anastacio, SP, Piracicaba, SP, and Porto Alegre, RS units.

Klabin Papeis S.A. (KPSA), as a wholly owned subsidiary of KIC, through the transfer of the old installations of PGK, for the production of art paper and paper napkins.

Agro Florestal Celucat S.A., as integrated subsidiary of Papel e Celulose Catarinense Ltda.

1979

June 16th: Start-up of paper production at the Mogi das Cruzes, SP unit.

Second half: share control of the companies Papel e Celulose Catarinense Ltda and Klabin Embalagens S.A. (KESA) acquired.

November 21st: establishment of Klabin Mineraçao S.A., PR.

With the introduction of the new law on “Sociedades Anonimas” – public companies - in 1979, the Board of Directors was established, composed of the company’s shareholders, in compliance with the law.

The Board of Directors allowed the professionalization process to be carried out in a clearly defined, rational way. The various Directorships of the companies, elected by the Board, came to be held by professional executives. In this new context, the statutes of the Klabin Group companies’ were gradually undergoing alteration.

Klabin Irmãos & Companhia - KIC, established as a Collective Name Corporation, came to have totally independent administration, integrating representation of all its managing directors. In this same context, a Board of Directors was established in Indústrias Klabin do Paraná de Celulose SA – IKPC, which went public and began to be traded on the São Paulo Stock Exchange. The managing directors of KIC themselves and their assessors, oversaw the professionalization of the companies, resorting to specialists and participating actively in the entire process.

1980

Official opening of the Piracicaba, SP Unit.

1981

Shareholding control of PONSA is transferred to KESA.

1982

Change in shareholding: CFP becomes a wholly owned subsidiary of KIC.

Acquisition of Rio Grande Companhia de Celulose do Sul (Riocell), in the town of Guaíba (RS).

1983

IKPC assumes control of KPSA, CFP (CFP Mogi das Cruzes) and incorporates KESA.

Establishment of IKPC operational divisions:

Packaging Division of Klabin do Parana, resulting from the merger of KESA (Vila Anastacio, SP; Del Castilho, RJ; Sao Leopoldo, RS; and Piracicaba, SP Units).

Paper Division: Monte Alegre, PR mill.

September: establishment of Riocell Mineradora e Industrial Ltda., as a subsidiary of Riocell S.A.

1984

Start-up of phytotherapy activities at IKPC.

Creation of the Samuel Klabin Eco Park in Monte Alegre, PR.

1985

April: alteration name from IKPC (Industrias Klabin do Parana de Celulose S.A.) to Industrias Klabin de Papel e Celulose S.A.

Name change from Paper Division to Klabin do Parana Division.

1986

Alteration of CFP’s registered name to Klabin Fabricadora de Papeis S.A.

June: acquisition of Bates do Brasil Papel e Celulose S.A. by Papel e Celulose Catarinense Ltda.

1987

February: integral incorporation of the subsidiary Companhia Papeleira do Sul (CPS) by Riocell.

Investments in expansion of Riocell’s forest reserves and in the installation of new equipment for the production of bleached pulp.

Inauguration of the Betim Plant (MG), expanding the corrugated box sector.

December: Klabin withdraws from the ceramics business.

1989

Creation of the Klabin Documentation and Memorial Center

August: establishment of Klabin Fabricadora de Papel e Celulose S.A. (KFPC) to administer the Group’s manufacturing operations. IKPC becomes a holding company.

Beginning of environmental education work.

Establishment of Norcell S.A., a joint venture between COPENE and Riocell S.A.

1990

Conclusion of the project for implementation of Norcell S.A.

Purchase of Companhia de Papéis (COPA) by KFPC, comprised of mills in Cruzeiro, SP, and Mendes, RJ, for the production of disposable papers.

Klabin Group becomes the largest Brazilian producer of sanitary paper products

Merger of Onibla Industria e Comercio and CFP Participações Ltda. with KFPC.

Merger of the converter subsidiaries Bates S.A. and Celucat S.A. with Papel e Celulose Catarinense Ltda..

1992

Joint venture formed for the establishment of Bacell Ltda., with KFPC and Lenzing Aktiengesellschaft as shareholders, for the production of high-quality soluble cellulose for the textile industry.

Deactivation of the Vila Anastacio, SP Plant

Transfer of employees and machinery from the Vila Anastacio plant to the recently build Jundiai, SP Unit.

Approval of the incorporation of Companhia de Papéis (COPA) by KFPC, as a subsidiary.

COPA: Establishment of COPA Fabricadora Division, with incorporation of Mogi das Cruzes (SP) and São Paulo (SP) Plants.

Merger of PONSAPAR Participações into PONSA.

1993

Entry of Papel e Celulose Catarinense Ltda in the tissue sector with inauguration of tissue paper plant (paper for sanitary uses).

Transformation of Bacel Ltda. into a corporation through joint venture with International Finance Corporation.

1994

Bacell receives financial support from the BNDES System and Deutsche Investitions-und Entwicklungsgesellchaft GmbH.

1995

Installation of tissue paper conversion in Recife (PE), in a Bates plant that had been closed down.

1996

Reorganization of terminology in productive sectors: the term "division" is substituted by "business unit".

KFPC assumes responsibility for the Parana Business Unit (Mill in Telêmaco Borba, PR) and for the Corrugated Packaging Business Unit (Plants in Betim (MG), Jundiaí and Piracicaba (SP), São Leopoldo (RS), Del Castilho (RJ)).

Partial split-off of KFPC, with the transfer of the sanitary paper sector (COPA Manufacturing Division) to Papel e Celulose Catarinense Ltda.

Alteration of the company name from Papel e Celulose Catarinense Ltda to Celucat S.A.. Assumes responsibility for the Tissue Paper Business Unit (Correia Pinto (SC), São Paulo, Mogi das Cruzes and Cruzeiro (SP), Recife (PE), Mendes (RJ) Plants) and for the Kraft Business Unit (Correia Pinto and Lages (SC), Contagem (MG) Plants).

Setting-up of joint-venture between IKPC and Kimberly-Clark, via the subsidiaries Kimberly-Clark Worldwide Inc. and Celucat S.A., controlled by the company Celulosa Argentina S.A.. The new enterprise is called KCK Tissue S.A.

July: closing down of Santana Plant, in São Paulo.

December: start-up of production of KCK Tissue S.A.

December: December: establishment of Klabin Tissue S.A., as a subsidiary of IKPC.

3rd of April: Klabin S.A. stops production of newsprint and withdraws from the sector.

2005

Klabin forests in Santa Catarina are awarded the seal of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), considered to be the most respected world organization in sustainability. With this seal, Klabin now has almost 100% of its forests certified.

Klabin is awarded FSC chain of custody certification for cartonboard and kraftliner in the Parana mill, and becomes the only company in the world to have received this seal.

Klabin’s Youth with a Future Program is launched in the plants of Feira de Santana, Goiana, Itajaí, Jundiaí, Lages, Piracicaba, Ponte Nova, São Leopoldo and Telêmaco Borba.

Klabin wins 29 prizes during the course of the year in several fields, especially noteworthy being:

Eco Prize

The case of “Monte Alegre Plant” won a prize in the category of Business Management for Sustainability. The Eco Prize is offered by the American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM).

CNI Award

The Plasma Project, developed by Klabin in partnership with Tetra Pak, Alcoa and TSL Ambiental, was the winner in the Sustainable Development category, in the class of Cleaner Production at state and national levels. The prize is awarded by the Confederação Nacional das Indústrias (CNI) and the Federação das Indústrias de São Paulo (FIESP).

USP Prize for Corporate Communication

Winner in the Campaign category with the case “Integrated Communication as the Basis for Brand Building”. The prize is offered by ECA- Escola de Comunicações e Artes da Universidade de São Paulo.

Klabin, Tetra Pak, Alcoa and TSL Ambiental inaugurate, in Piracicaba in the interior of São Paulo State, the first plant in the world of the Plasma project to recycle long-life packaging.

2006

Approved on the 13th of January 2006 by Klabin’s Board of Directors, the MA-1100 Project is targeted to raise the capacity of the Monte Alegre mill, located in Telemaco Borba (PR), from 700 thousand tons per year to 1.1 million tons per year.

Klabin wins the FSC seal for production of paper and industrial sacks in the Angatuba plant, in the State of São Paulo.

March:

XV Embanews Trophy, Klabin wins in two categories: Plasma Project to recycle long-life packages, and Klabin cartonboard in the category machines, equipment and systems.

May:

V Export Quality Prize organised by Madeira magazine, and considered to be one of the most important prizes from the timber, furniture and pulp and paper sectors is to recognise the largest exporting companies in the country.

FSC certification issued for cartonboard and kraftliner production in Angatuba (SP), for industrial sacks in Lages (SC), and for sack kraft and kraftliner(packaging papers) in Correia Pinto and Otacílio Costa (SC) Plants.

Klabin is elected by Exame magazine, in the "Biggest and Best" edition as the company from the pulp and paper sector in the 2006 ranking.

FSC certification issued for cartonboard packaging. The first Brazilian packaging company to be awarded the right to use this trademark, which was a partnership between Klabin, Box Print printers and Natura. Winning the right to use this trademark covers the entire packaging production chain and certification guarantees traceability of raw materials throughout the production chain.

Recertification of the Integrated Management System (SIG) which includes ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 in the Otacílio Costa and Correia Pinto (SC) Plants.

August and September:

Launching of the Youth with a Future Program in the plants of Betim (MG), Angatuba (SP) and Guapimirim (RJ).

September, October and November:

New Plants become involved with Klabin’s Youth with a Future Program: Goiana (PE), Feira de Santana (BA), Piracicaba and Jundiaí (SP), Ponta Grossa (MG), Correia Pinto, Itajaí, Lages and Otacílio Costa(SC), São Leopoldo (RS) and Telêmaco Borba (PR).

December:

Unification of Klabin’s corporate offices, Rocio and Formosa, in the new head office at the Faria Lima Square Building.

2007

February:

Building of the Training Center for adolescents starts in Feira de Santana (BA). Klabin contributed by donating the land.

19th of April: Klabin commemorated 108 years of long history and tradition.

Launch of a new product: the corrugated pallet, stronger and lighter.

Caiubi Program of Environmental Education is launched in Santa Catarina.

FSC certification issued for the products Recycled Paper in the Guapimirim and Piracicaba Plants and Corrugated Boxes in the Jundiaí (TP/DI), Piracicaba and Itajaí Plants.
