How important is sustainability in Klabin’s business?
Klabin has remained loyal to its commitments ever since it was founded in 1899: respect for nature, appreciation of people and concern with sustainable development. In our daily business, we conduct ourselves in a socially just, economically viable and environmentally correct manner and with the conviction that we have to create value for all of society as we grow.
These commitments were reaffirmed in 2005 with the approval of Klabin’s Policy of Sustainability. In this policy, we laid out seven principles which apply to all our activities concerning our products, services and relationships with our partners: customers, employees, shareholders, communities and suppliers.
How does Klabin handle Research & Development?
Klabin has progressed in consolidating its research and development activities, which cover forestry, paper, boards and converted products. It works, also, in partnership with STFI-Packforsk, research center for the Swedish pulp, paper and packaging industries, and a world benchmark in the innovation of value-added products.
Innovation is focused on meeting the needs of customers, who are our partners in developing products, processes and materials which bring productivity and quality gains. This is carried out also with the collaboration of equipment and raw material suppliers.
Does Klabin have any project or take any action which helps the environment?
Yes, as a company committed to sustainable development, all of Klabin’s actions take the need for environmental respect into account. As examples of such actions, we can mention environmental programs created and sponsored by the company (link to the area), international certification by the Forest Stewardship Council – FSC – for sustainable management in forested areas, paper recycling (link to the area), and the reduction in materials consumption during the production process. Other important initiatives include the innovation of the energy matrix, the company’s adhesion to the Chicago Climate Exchange – CCX (link to the area), the development of projects based on the Kyoto Protocol and the promotion of clean technologies.
Does the company recycle and dispose of waste adequately? Does it have a policy to manage environmental impacts?
Klabin is deeply committed to environmental responsibility and sustainable development. A specific directorship is dedicated to matters of Energy and the Environment. Among other actions, Klabin contributes to the preservation of biodiversity through projects for conserving protected areas; it has a policy, program and specific processes of environmental conservation for application in protected or environmentally sensitive areas; it has an explicit policy of non-utilization of materials and raw material which is the product of illegal exploitation of natural resources (such as wood, non-wood forest products, animals etc.); it has processes at its disposal for the systemic mapping of environmental risks; periodically it runs internal campaigns to reduce energy and water consumption, as well as to encourage the conscious consumption and recycling of certain materials. The company also supports campaigns and participates in educational projects together with non-governmental and environmental organizations.
Is there an estimate of how much paper is recycled?
As the biggest paper recycler in South America, with an installed capacity of 330 thousand tons a year of paper made from 100% recycled fibers, Klabin has committed itself to promoting recycling in all of its production chain. This process signifies an important social contribution, by providing work for thousands of curbside collectors throughout the country. This goal is strengthened still further with its participation in the Corporate Commitment to Recycling (Cempre), an association which is maintained by private companies from various sectors and dedicated to promoting recycling in accordance with the concept of integrated waste management. A company Director is president of the organization’s board of directors. Through its actions, Cempre tries to make people aware of the importance of reducing, reutilizing and recycling with the support of articles, technical surveys, seminars and data banks. Proof of this has been the recent development of world-first technology for the complete recycling of long-life packaging. Thanks to the partnership between Klabin, Tetra Pak, Alcoa and TSL Ambiental it is now feasible to recycle 100% of the aluminum, plastic and paper.
Does the company cooperate with any kind of survey regarding biodiversity?
Yes, the biodiversity and wealth of the Monte Alegre Unit Forests in Telemaco Borba, PR, are the permanent target of academic research by important Brazilian universities. Other initiatives are the Puma Project, amphibian survey, Phytotherapy Program and the Ecological Park.
Does the company extract any kind of raw material from the biodiversity which is utilized in its production process?
The raw material used for Klabin’s paper and packaging production comes from planted forests, that is to say, Klabin harvests what it plants. Forest management applies the mosaic concept, by planting pine and eucalyptus intermingled with native forest areas, preserving biodiversity by creating natural corridors.
The biodiversity which is present in the preserved, native forests at Klabin Monte Alegre Unit, PR, through a system of rational handling in the sustained yield of Non-Wood Forest Products (NWFP), makes it possible to obtain the materials necessary for the production of plant-based medicines. This is the basis of the Phytotherapy Program, the main goal of which is to add value to non-wood products by bringing social and ecological returns.
What are the principal economic, social and environmental contributions made by the Forestry Incentive Program?
The Forestry Incentive Program is designed to start new forests in idle and marginal areas of rural properties, introducing them into the production process and guaranteeing future income for the small and medium-sized landowners who will, consequently, stay put on the land. Through these actions, Klabin gets the community involved in its production chain which today extends to more than 60 countries. Besides this, there are advantages for the company by having to invest less of its own resources in lands and more in its core business which is industrial, making packaging paper and paper-made packaging. There are also clear environmental advantages because forest plantations not only supply the firewood and wood used in rural activities but also preserve and protect the properties’ soil from erosion, stop silting in the rivers and control the flow of water and rain. This is therefore a win-win game between company and society.
How many farmers are involved in Klabin’s Forestry Incentive Program?
The partnership involves 15 thousand small and medium-sized producers in the states of Parana and Santa Catarina and 79,507 hectares of planted forests. Since the beginning of the program – in 1984, in Santa Catarina and 1987 in Parana – 139llion seedlings of pine and eucalyptus have been distributed.
Does Klabin have a recycling project for long-life packages? How does it work?
Klabin is the biggest paper recycler in Latin America, with a production capacity of 300 thousand tons per year of recycled paper. Recently the company, together with Tetra Pak, TSL Ambiental and Alcoa, developed world-first technology which permits total recycling of long-life packaging.
The companies inaugurated a new plant in Piracicaba in the interior of Sao Paulo. The process revolutionized the current model for recycling long-life packaging, which hitherto had separated the paper but kept the plastic and the aluminum together. The Plasma process offers a new recycling option by allowing the three components of the package to be returned to the production chain in the form of raw material.
Does Klabin use clean technologies?
Klabin complies with all the environmental regulations in force in the country and the evolution in pulp and paper has considerably reduced the impact of the manufacturing process on the environment. New technologies permit reductions in the consumption of water and energy, utilization of environmentally more adequate chemicals, odor reduction, and correct disposal of solid wastes generated by the production process.
Klabin’s energy matrix basically consists of clean energy, that is to say, renewable energy.
Biofuel utilization – bark, chips, forest residues, wood thinnings and the residues from pulp production – means that only 18% of the energy comes from fossil fuels (BPF and natural gas). In coming years, the regular use of heavy oil for steam generation in the paper mills will be eliminated. New biofuel boilers will be installed in Parana and in Santa Catarina. The pressure and temperature levels in the new co-generation unit in Parana will be raised to 100 bar and 500°C (compared with 46 bar and 430°C at present). The target is to improve the electrical/thermal energy binomial, and reduce dependence on the external supply of electricity, placing Klabin in the forefront of Brazilian producers.
How does Klabin deal with biodiversity in its forests?
Klabin has planted forests in the States of Parana, Santa Catarina and São Paulo. There are 441 thousand hectares of lands of which 183 thousand hectares (40% of the total area of its forests) are kept as Areas of Permanent Preservation and Legal Reserves. The remaining areas are forests planted with pines and eucalyptus (218 thousand hectares) and space that has been set aside for infrastructure (plants, roads etc.). In Parana, Klabin’s land is the biggest green area in the South of Brazil and is easily identified in satellite photos. Forest stewardship has followed the mosaic concept by planting pines and eucalyptus intermingled with areas of native woodlands, thus helping to preserve the biodiversity. 630 species of mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and fish can be encountered in the Parana forests alone, meaning 40% of all the species already identified in the State. 15 of these are on IBAMA’s list of endangered animals. In November 2005, two puma cubs were born in the pine forests. A number of practices have been adopted in order to perpetuate the biodiversity, such as:
• Maintenance and recuperation of areas of permanent preservation
• Selective waste collection
• Monitoring hydrographic micro-basins
• Monitoring fauna and flora
• Environmental education for schools, neighboring communities and employees
• Vigilance against hunting
• Monitoring for possible erosion and proper maintenance of roads and side-roads
• Upkeep of the Scientific Breeding Ground for Wild Animals
• Maintenance of the ecological park for the purpose of environmental education and scientific research
• Environmental recovery program consisting of several projects in the areas of permanent preservation such as planting native species.
How did the concept of social responsibility evolve inside the company and how has it influenced its way of thinking and doing business?
During its 109 years of existence, Klabin has always sought to act in an economically viable, environmentally correct and socially just way, concentrating all its efforts on social and environmental initiatives in neighboring communities. From 2005 on, the company’s Social Responsibility activities have been subordinated to the Director of Communication and Social Responsibility. Since then, we started a line of action which kicked off a nationwide Corporate Social Responsibility Program called the Klabin’s Youth with a Future Program, in the 8 states where we operate, as well as local, social assistance initiatives by our 17 production plants. Currently, we are running several socio-environmental projects, among which are: Pingo D’Agua Program, Caiubi Environmental Education Program, Phytotherapy Program, Quality of Life Program and the Legal Woods Program. We sponsor an initiative by the company’s employees, the Terra Viva Volunteer Association. To assure perfect understanding by all interested parties of its real commitment to promoting sustainable development in its projects, investments and undertakings, Klabin has drawn up a Policy of Sustainability.
What does sustainability mean to Klabin?
Historically, Klabin is committed to sustainable development, a precept which the company practices in all its activities. This posture has brought the company both national and international recognition and awards. Sustainability is the equilibrium between environmental, economic and social axes, and Klabin is one of the country’s pioneers in the adoption and practice of this precept.
What does Klabin produce?

What products does Klabin export?
Klabin exports its products to 60 countries on 5 continents. It is the largest Brazilian paper exporter, responsible for 75% of all export shipments.
How important is innovation in the packaging industry?
Packaging is the first impression one gets of a product. It helps to sell the product. Innovation in corrugated packaging means doing away with the idea of packaging for transport and creating solutions which accompany it to the point of sale, associating the corrugated box with: the image of its contents; conservation of the product inside, organization at the point of sale; practicality in handling and transport; efficiency and cost reduction in the logistic chain; adaptation to new consumer habits and style of life.
In general terms how is a new package developed at Klabin?
The corrugated box is always personalized. Depending on the product to be packagd, we study all the technical requirements of the packaging, where we need to know the conditions for packing, transport, storage, final destination, sales appeals, laws on package marking and perceptions of the end user regarding our customers. This combination of factors, among others, defines the type of packaging, the paper which will go into it, the machines which will be involved in the manufacturing process and printing requirements.
Which company projects have contributed to packaging most easily recycled or with the least quantity of materials (the lightest)?
Klabin is always looking to optimize the use of available virgin or recycled fibers in the quality of the boxes supplied and, in this way, manage to increase box strength. The permanent target is to supply more packaged materials with the least weight of corrugated boxes possible.
In an effort to produce boxes which can be recycled more easily, Klabin has made ongoing improvements in its converting processes, with more recycling-friendly additives and raw materials, and has also invested in a number of important technologies, such as in the creation of moisture and steam barriers, which do away with the need for parafin and other contaminating agents in the final product.
In order to produce more easily recyclable boxes, Klabin has constantly improved its converting processes, with additives and raw materials which are more recycling-friendly, and has invested in several important technologies such as the development of moisture and steam barriers which do away with the need for paraffin and other contaminating agents in the final product.
Besides just the technological aspect, what sort of initiative has the company undertaken to increase the percentage of recycled paper in its packaging?
Besides participating actively in CEMPRE- Compromisso Empresarial para a Reciclagem, Klabin is constantly looking for new ways to encourage and increase the use of recycled paper. Among these ways, we can mention a Brazilian project which is one-of-a-kind in the world of recycling composite packaging, like long-life packages, where Klabin is part of a consortium with Tetra Pak, Alcoa and TSL Ambiental for the complete recycling of paper, polyethylene and aluminum, found in these packages. We also participate in projects to stimulate recycling, sponsoring: -Initiatives to establish cooperatives -Selective waste collection -Projects of environmental education and awareness of the values of recycling (Programa Caiubi de Educaçao Ambiental) -Diversification in the procurement of waste paper so as to develop new, smaller participants in various regions -A clear policy approved by the competent organs to dispose of any process waste, fortifying other recycling processes such as glass, plastic or metal. These initiatives help to strengthen the paper-recycling sector, in which Brazil is a world benchmark, with 79% of all corrugated boxes returning to this process.
