Klabin’s research and development division has made progress in recent years with ongoing improvements and technological innovations in production of the company’s pulp, paper and cartonboard, and also in reducing the costs of product development and industrial processes. The division also covers aspects of environment, quality, productivity, health and safety in the execution of company projects.

Klabin invests in research and development, focused on processes, products and partnerships with research institutes and universities.

With nearly 25 researchers, six with a Master’s or Doctoral degree, the company offers technical assistance to its direct (converters) and indirect customers to solve common problems of paper (kraft) and cartonboard packaging in matters of physical properties – barriers (water, steam, grease, pests), porosity, permeability, smoothness – and conversion: slitting, creasing, gluing, closure and printing.

The laboratories installed in Monte Alegre, Correia Pinto, Otacilio Costa and Angatuba not only support the production plants but also develop projects in conjunction with the sales departments.

Activities

Research and development activities at Klabin can be broken down as follows: forestry research, wood preparation, pulping and bleaching, wet end chemistry, physical and optical properties of the paper, finishing, printing processes, analytical methods, process controls; environment and new product development.

In all of Klabin’s plants, the R&D area applies the same methodology, using a project management tool which covers every step of the research area’s activities, so as to ensure availability of information throughout these steps and guarantee the criteria of priority, execution and termination of the projects.

The projects of research and development also attend to demands from the Customer Service and Sales areas, always focused on the strategic planning of the company, within its statutory and regulatory requirements.

Superar Program

The Research and Development division uses WCM (World Class Manufacturing) methodology and is one of the pillars of the Superar Program, which works with both the development of new solutions in processes and products, and anticipates solutions for the problems of its production and of the customers (box converters).
